The MOC3052M is a random-phase optoisolator expertly designed to isolate low voltage logic from 115 and 240 VAC lines, delivering dependable random phase control of high current triacs or thyristors. This optotriac ensures stable switching performance, particularly with inductive loads, thanks to its enhanced static dv/dt capability.

Key Features

- Excellent IFT Stability: The IR emitting diode exhibits low degradation, ensuring consistent performance over time.

- High Isolation Voltage: Offers a minimum isolation voltage of 5300 VACRMS. Some sources list 4170 VACRMS.

- 600V Peak Blocking Voltage: Suitable for applications requiring high voltage handling.

- Random-Phase Operation: Can be triggered at any phase angle within the AC sine wave, allowing for phase control.

- Safety and Regulatory Approvals: UL1577 recognized (4,170 VACRMS for 1 Minute) and compliant with DIN EN/IEC60747-5-5.

Typical Applications

- Solenoid/Valve Controls

- Lamp Ballasts

- Static AC Power Switches

- Interfacing Microprocessors to 115 VAC and 240 VAC Peripherals

- Solid State Relays

- Incandescent Lamp Dimmers

- Temperature Controls

- Motor Controls

- Consumer Appliances

- Industrial Motor Control

Benefits and Use Cases

The MOC3052M is ideal for applications requiring electrical isolation and control of AC loads. Its random-phase operation makes it suitable for phase control applications, which can be achieved using an AC line zero cross detector and a variable pulse delay generator, or a microprocessor synchronized to the AC zero crossing. The enhanced dv/dt capability ensures reliable performance with inductive loads, preventing false triggering and half-waving issues. In certain applications with resistive loads and low AC line noise, the MOC3052M can be used without a snubber circuit, simplifying the design and reducing component count.

Additional Information

The device is designed to be phase controllable, and the LED trigger current may be a short pulse to save energy. However, LED trigger pulse currents shorter than 100µs may require an increased amplitude. When used in noisy environments or with power triacs and triac drivers exceeding maximum ratings, a snubber circuit is recommended to slow down fast transients and clip excessive amplitudes using a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV).
